The Jemez Mountains Elk Festival is hosted by the Valles Caldera National Preserve from October 1 – 9, 2011. The festival includes activities at the Valles Caldera Visitor Center, self-guided hikes, elk spotting scopes to see the elk herd and talks on scat and sign scouting. Some events and locations involved in the Elk Festival are free, some require admission or event fees. See all Jemez Mountain Elk Festival events, and the Valles Caldera National Preserve calendar for more details. The festival takes place at the same time as the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, so could be a good side trip for visitors to New Mexico at that time (about 2 – 2.5 hours drive from Albuquerque). See directions to the Valles Caldera National Preserve.
