National Parks that usually charge admission fees are free for all visitors for this weekend, from January 14 – 16 2012.
The free entry to National Parks offers the chance to enjoy the great New Mexico outdoors over the Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend.
New Mexico National Parks that usually charge fees but are free on January 14-16 are:
- Aztec Ruins National Monument
- Bandelier National Monument (check the website for the latest info for travelers to Bandelier, as some areas still remain closed following last summer’s fire.)
- Capulin Volcano National Monument
- Carlsbad Caverns National Park
- Chaco Culture National Historical Park
- El Morro National Monument
- Fort Union National Monument
- Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument (The Gila Cliff Dwellings are currently closed, but a Gila visitor center is open with guided tours of the TJ Site daily at 11 am and 2 pm. Check the park website for latest info.
- Pecos National Historical Park
- White Sands National Monument

For readers in northern New Mexico, note that Mesa Verde National Park, just over the border in Southwestern Colorado, is currently waiving its admission fee until March 3, 2012. After this period of free admission, the regular rate of $10 or $15 per vehicle applies, depending when you visit.
